In addition to the Southern Roundabout works, further highway improvements are planned as part of the WBSL expansion, including the installation of new cycleways. These works will also involve renewing street lighting and installing a new signal-controlled pedestrian crossing on Aerodrome Way. To facilitate this, new underground services are required on both sides of Aerodrome Way, and we will need to cross the roads to connect them. Highlighted in red in fig 1 below are the 4 locations where services will need to cross the road.
At locations 1 & 3, services will be installed using a technique known as ‘directional drilling’. This process involves excavating pits on either side of the road, allowing work to be carried out beneath the road surface while keeping Aerodrome Way open to traffic.
For location 2, we are still to agree a solution to install the services, and this will be communicated in due course.
At location 4, at the junction of Bateson Drive, space constraints require that services need be installed by excavating the road. This work will be completed in phases to maintain access that traffic can still enter and exit at the junction. Traffic management measures will be put in place whilst we carry out the work, which will include three-way temporary traffic lights. Details of the proposed traffic management are outlined below.
Before these works begin, exploratory investigations will be undertaken on either side of the highway to confirm the location of existing underground services. These activities will not affect the highways, and pedestrian access will be maintained at all times. The exploratory works are currently scheduled to start on 9th February 2026 and are expected to last five days.
Location 1 – 9th February 2026 (1 week)
Location 2 – 2nd March 2026 (1 week)
Location 3 – 9th March 2026 (1 week)
Location 4 – TBC (Subject to Local Authority Approval)
These works will be carried out in normal working hours, Monday to Friday only.
Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while these works are carried out. We will ensure all reasonable steps are taken to minimise disruption wherever possible.
